The coir plate is a carefully blended potting mix (perfectly tailored to your plant type and situation if needed). The coir is dried and compressed into a compression disc, which has a special hole for plugging when appropriate.

When hydrated, the dish will swell to create the required potting mix. All you need to do is place the dish in a container and the water will do the rest. The discs come in a variety of sizes or can also be tailored to your specifications.​
