What Are Coir Pellets?

Coir pellets (also called coco peat pellets, coir seed plugs or coco discs) are compressed tablets made from screened coco peat, a natural by-product of coconut processing. When moistened, each pellet expands several times its original size, forming a soft, airy plug that holds moisture while keeping plenty of air around the roots.

  • Made from renewable coconut coir
  • pH balanced and EC controlled for sensitive crops
  • Wrapped in a 100% biodegradable net that works like a mini pot
  • Packaged compactly for easy shipping and storage

VinaTap manufactures coir pellets at our coco substrate factory in Vietnam, alongside coco coir bags, coco husk chips and other growing media.

Key Benefits of VinaTap Coir Pellets

1. Ideal for Seed Sowing

The natural structure of coco peat keeps seeds evenly moist without waterlogging. This helps achieve high germination rates and uniform seedlings.

  • Excellent moisture retention with good drainage
  • Clean, pathogen-reduced substrate — ideal for young roots
  • Reduces damping-off and root diseases compared to heavy soils

2. Excellent for Cutting Propagation

For cuttings, coir pellets provide high air-filled porosity and gentle support for fragile stems and new roots.

  • Loose, fibrous matrix promotes quick callus and root formation
  • Roots penetrate the net easily and stay white and healthy
  • Simply transplant the whole pellet without disturbing the roots

3. Perfect for Hydroponics & Soilless Systems

Coir pellets are a great starter medium for hydroponic and greenhouse crops. Seedlings or cuttings rooted in pellets can be transferred directly into grow bags or other hydroponic containers filled with coco peat or coco husk chips.

  • Neutral to slightly acidic pH: easy to manage nutrient solutions
  • Uniform plug size — excellent for automated nursery systems
  • Compatible with drip, ebb-and-flow and other hydroponic setups

4. Sustainable & Eco-Friendly

Coco peat is a renewable, organic material. Using coir pellets helps reduce reliance on peat moss and plastic pots, supporting more sustainable horticulture.

  • Made from coconut coir, a by-product of the coconut industry
  • Biodegradable net — no plastic pot to discard
  • Safe for organic and environmentally conscious growers

How to Use VinaTap Seed Nursery Coir Tablets

  1. Hydrate the pellets
Place the coir pellets in a tray and add clean water. Within 2–5 minutes they expand to 3–5 times their original height, forming soft nursery plugs.
  2. Sow or insert cuttings
Place pre-soaked seeds in the center hole, or gently insert cuttings into the expanded plug.
  3. Maintain moisture
Keep the pellets evenly moist (not soaked). A humidity dome or tunnel can speed up germination.
  4. Grow on
Care for seedlings as usual until roots are visible through the net and pellets hold together firmly.
  5. Transplant
Move the entire pellet into a larger pot, grow bag or field soil — no need to remove the net. Roots will grow straight through into the new substrate.
